What is the presence of Greta Thunber in the European media before the next elections, as proponents of the declaration of the climate emergency? We choose the two most popular newspapers in the five most populated countries: The Guardian and The Times (United Kingdom), Le Monde and Le Figaro (France), Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Tageszeitung (Germany), La Reppublica and Corriere della Sera (Italy) ), and El País and El Mundo (Spain). And we took the data about the presence in the first quarter of the terms «climate change», «réchauffement climatique», «klimawandel», «cambiamenti climatici» and «cambio climático», respectively, with the Factiva search engine. Then we analyze the presence of «Greta Thunberg» inside them.

The first graph shows the difference in the presence of «climate change» in two main media in each country. UK stands out with a greater volume of coverage. It is followed by Germany, Spain, France and Italy.

The second y third graphics show how «Greta Thunberg» has been specially addressed in the «climate change» articles in Italian newspapers, followed by Germany and Spain. Less presence has had in France and the UK.

Greta has catalyzed the image of the initiative Fridays For Future

In the press that we have analyzed, Greta has quadrupled the role of Fridays For Future. She has catalyzed the image of the initiative. In an analysis from August 14 to March 13 in the Spanish newspapers El País, El Mundo, La Vanguardia and Expansión, Greta appears in 32 articles compared to 8 of the Frydays initiative. The Swedish teenager is treated with a positive or neutral tone in El País (she appears in 18 articles) and La Vanguardia (10 articles). El Mundo (4 articles) treats her with a positive, neutral and negative tone. Expansion does not even name it. The trend has been upward, especially in the last two months.
